A NYSIR way to help pay for college

Know a college-bound high school senior in a NYSIR member district who either has worked his or her way through special challenges or has demonstrated a promising talent in design? Then point them to our one-of-a-kind New York Schools Insurance Reciprocal scholarships.

The 2009 Cristin Ann Bambino Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a special-education student in acknowledgement of the diligence, commitment and enterprise it takes to work through special challenges on the way to receiving a high school diploma and acceptance at a college or university. The $3,000 scholarship is payable over two semesters; interested students must submit an application accompanied by an essay not to exceed 650 words addressing the student’s accomplishments (academic achievements, club memberships, athletic associations), examples of how they overcame their challenges, how they might serve as role models for other special students and what they intend to study in college.

A separate award – the 2009 Paul Jensen Memorial Scholarship – is available to a student who over the course of his or her high school career has excelled in design. The $3,000 award, also payable over two semesters, is given to a college-bound senior who has demonstrated promise in the field of design. Interested soon-to-be graduates must submit an application plus an essay, not to exceed 650 words, explaining how they might design or adapt an existing design for a specific purpose, how that would be accomplished and why the new design would be useful. Schematics and drawings are optional, but could be helpful.

All application packages must be mailed to NYSIR Executive Director Joseph Goncalves and postmarked no later than April 1, 2009.
