Say Hello To Dewey O’Denum

Yuck and kudos at the same time.

Second-graders at Desert Trail Elementary School in Chaparral, N.M., sing and dance as they smilingly pluck the liver, intestines and other Velcro-ed viscera from a plush doll as part of a program that teaches about exercise and good nutrition.

As reported by the Las Cruces Sun-News, it’s a learning experience that features huggable characters called the OrganWise Guys who stick together – sorry – to demonstrate the value of a low-fat diet, high-fiber foods, lots of water and regular physical activity. Among the colorful cast are the Kidney Brothers, Peter Pancreas, Luigi Liver, Peri Stolic (an intensely intestinal sort) and Hardy Heart.

“This one goes here,” the paper quoted an eight-year-old as saying while she stuffed Hardy back into his rightful place in the doll’s fuzzy torso.

Wait a minute. That probably should be left-ful.

The school’s parent outreach ambassador, Monica Arrey, said the youngsters have really, um… gotten into it. “At first, they (parents) thought the kids were not going to be receptive, but they love it.”

What a curriculum. Or is that another one of those icky parts down there in the lower tract?
